Stroke Consultation – Cerebrovascular Disease

Stroke Consultation – Cerebrovascular Disease

Cerebrovascular disease is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Portugal, representing a major public health challenge.

Among cerebrovascular conditions, stroke (Cerebrovascular Accident – CVA) stands out as the main cause of death and acquired disability in the adult population, with more than 25,000 new cases each year. Strokes often result in sudden neurological deficits, such as difficulty articulating speech, deviation of the mouth, and/or weakness or loss of sensation on one side of the body.

In addition to acute and evident forms, the disease can also progress silently and gradually, leading to cumulative brain lesions. These changes may manifest as early cognitive decline and, in more advanced stages, result in vascular dementia, which is more commonly observed in older individuals.

The Stroke Consultation is aimed at patients with a history of stroke or transient ischaemic attacks (TIA), providing specialised and continuous clinical follow-up. Its main objectives are to prevent recurrent events, optimise control of vascular risk factors, and support functional and cognitive recovery following the initial episode.

This service is provided by a medical specialist with expertise in cerebrovascular disorders, ensuring a patient- and family-centred approach focused on secondary prevention. It is particularly indicated for complex cases or patients with multiple comorbidities, serving as a link between the hospital phase and long-term outpatient follow-up.

In the consultation, conditions frequently associated with the risk of recurrence are assessed, such as:

Arterial hypertension

Arterial hypertension

It is characterized by the persistent elevation of blood pressure, increasing the risk of cardiovascular complications.

Diabetes mellitus

Diabetes mellitus

It is a metabolic disease that manifests as elevated blood glucose levels due to defects in insulin production or action.

Dyslipidemia

Dyslipidemia

It consists of alterations in blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels, contributing to the development of atherosclerosis.

Atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation

It is a common cardiac arrhythmia that causes irregular heartbeats and may increase the risk of stroke.

Carotid artery stenosis

Carotid artery stenosis

Refers to the narrowing of these arteries, which may compromise cerebral blood flow and lead to ischemic events.

Additional tests

Additional tests are requested, such as:

  • CT scan or cranioencephalic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI-CE)
  • Carotid Doppler
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Holter monitor or echocardiogram, in coordination with other relevant clinical specialties.

Specialised follow-up for this condition is essential not only to reduce the risk of new events but also to promote a safer functional, cognitive, and social recovery.

At the HPA Health Group, this consultation offers a personalised follow-up plan, integrating an interdisciplinary approach and reinforcing the Group’s commitment to excellence in preventive, curative, and rehabilitative healthcare.
